Green Marine Highway Program on Marine Highway 35 and Marine Highway 55 (Illinois Waterway Portion): Decarbonization and Sustainability Initiatives

The Corn Belt Ports, strategically located above Locks and Dam 26 on the Upper Mississippi River (M35) and the Illinois Waterway (part of M55), span over 800 miles across five states and encompass four regional ports and over 50 counties. This region serves as a pivotal connection in the national supply chain, facilitating the transport of much of the nation’s corn and soybeans and related agriculture products to national and global markets while supporting diverse ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

Recognized for both its economic significance and ecological importance, the Upper Mississippi River System (which includes the Illinois River) is a vital integrated inland port complex and navigation route, and a critical ecosystem, recognized by the U.S. Congress. The Green Marine Highway Initiative aims to integrate sustainability and decarbonization into the Corn Belt Ports’ operations that reduce transportation costs and risks, address environmental challenges, while enhancing economic vitality.

The Corn Belt Ports strive to be the nation’s leaders in modern, sustainable, rural, regional, multi-modal, inland, partnership ports

Key aspects of the initiative include

Economic Impact: As a major inland port network, the Corn Belt Ports are crucial for freight transport and agricultural exports, necessitating sustainable, low cost and reliable transportation solutions to meet rising demands.

Environmental Benefits: Inland waterways offer significantly lower carbon emissions compared to other traditional transportation modes, positioning them as a sustainable alternative. The initiative promotes biofuel and renewables opportunities, and water resources, energy, and other infrastructure modernization to further reduce the carbon footprint.

Strategic Vision: Aligned with the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition’s roadmap to net-zero emissions, the initiative focuses on collaborative, common-sense, decarbonization efforts, technological advancements, and climate resilience strategies.

Through stakeholder collaboration, adaptation to climate-resilient and lower carbon technologies, and the integration of sustainable practices, the Green Marine Highway initiative seeks to position the Corn Belt Ports as a global leader in sustainable inland waterborne transportation. This paper explores the strategic goals, implementation strategies, challenges, and anticipated impacts of the initiative, highlighting its potential to set a benchmark for sustainable port systems nationwide.
